Apple won the first stage of its legal battle against teen web editor and others

By   | on March 15th, 2005 No comments

Computer giant Apple has won the first stage of its legal battle to force three online reporters/bloggers including a teenage boy, to reveal who gave them secret information about the company’s new products.

The company launched the fight in December last year after details of a new product – codenamed ”Asteroid” – appeared on a number of websites before they had been announced by Apple.

The teen web editor had claimed he was covered by laws that grant journalists the constitutional right to protect their sources.

But a California judge ruled it was irrelevant whether he was journalist or not, saying he had effectively stolen trade secrets. Apple is now entitled to see the e-mail records from the teen web editor and other bloggers to uncover which employee has been leaking the information.

Californian laws protect journalists from prosecution if what they are writing about can be shown to be in the public interest. But Judge James Kleinberg said: “An interested public is not the same as the public interest”.

Apple is notoriously secretive about its upcoming products.

IBM and ZEND team to accelerate development and deployment of PHP

By   | on February 25th, 2005 No comments

IBM announced an agreement with Zend Technologies to develop the industry’s first integrated solution designed to help developers build and deploy applications and services based on the popular PHP Web language. The new solution integrates IBM’s Cloudscapedatabase based on Apache Software Foundation Derby and Zend’s open source PHP environment. This agreement further expands IBM’s investment in open source by helping developers more effectively create applications based on the technology of their choice.

Under the agreement, IBM will work with Zend, the leading provider of products and services for developing, deploying and managing business-critical PHP applications, to create ‘Zend Core for IBM.’ The product will provide the industry’s first seamless out-of-the-box, PHP development and production environment, completely supported by Zend. Zend Core for IBM will feature seamless integration with IBM’s Cloudscape database server and DB2Universal Database. IBM and Zend are also jointly working on furthering PHP technology to include improved high-level database integration frameworks and enhanced PHP Web services standards.

The availability of Zend Core for IBM will significantly enhance developer support for IBM’s Cloudscape database, as PHP is one of the most popular Web programming languages in the world. According to the research firm Netcraft, PHP currently accounts for more than 40 percent of the overall Web scripting language market. Additionally, PHP technology adopting into both small and medium-size business (SMB) and large enterprises is growing steadily. Zend and its founders are the architects of PHP and creators of the Zend Engine, the kernel of PHP.

“Our partnership with IBM further cements PHP as the language of choice for business-critical Web applications,” said Doron Gerstel, CEO and President for Zend Technologies, Inc. “Zend Core for IBM is in line with Zend’s goal of delivering both simplicity and robust functionality to Web-based applications.”

According to Chris Shiflett, “As PHP has transitioned from personal projects to enterprise application development, the need to educate the community about secure programming practices has risen”. Chirs Shiflett is the founder of group.

The PHPSC web site ( http://phpsec.org) provides a variety of security resources for PHP developers, including the group’s flagship project, the PHP Security Guide.

Founded in January 2005, the PHP Security Consortium (PHPSC) is an international group of PHP experts dedicated to promoting secure programming practices within the PHP community. Members of the PHPSC seek to educate PHP developers about security through a variety of resources, including documentation, tools, and standards.

In addition to their educational efforts, the PHPSC engages in exploratory and experimental research in order to develop and promote standards of best practice for PHP application development.
