By   | on January 11th, 2005 No comments

A good (!) manual page for Internet Explorer

If one day MS decide to launch IE for linux, manual page can be like this. For Windows users :: Manual pages are help pages on linux and they can be accessed using man command.

IE(1) IE(1)

NAME
ie – Microsoft Internet Explorer

SYNOPSIS
ie [ -acfghkp ] [ -m alternate-passwd-file ] [ -length of time ]

DESCRIPTION
Ie is the web browser. The only web browser. Netscape is
irrelevant. Opera is irrelevant. Ie is your master. Kneel.

There are two ways to use ie: non-executed binary and
insecure mode. The non-executed binary is the mode ie
ships in. There are no flags or directions for use in this
mode.

Options are:

-a

-c Clear filesystem. Ie will delete all files for which
it has write permission on all mounted filesystems.
After the first pass, Ie will begin attempts at obtaining
root access so that the remaining files can be removed.

-f Same as -c, except that ie will immediately begin
attempting root access, and will newfs all mounted
filesystems.

-h Hack. Lets you link to other systems running ie and
obtain their passwd files.

-k Randomly coredump. If you specify a valid mailbox name
in parens, ie will mail the coredump to them.

-p Post /etc/passwd to alt.2600.

-m [alternate] Gives you the opportunity to specify an alternate
passwd file to post.

-length How long should ie run crack on the passwd file before
attempting to post?

AUTHOR
The usual gang of idiots.

BUGS
See printed ie documentation: “Problems with IE”, volumes
1-14, availible in hardcover from Microsoft Press.

The -g option is not implemented.

FILES
/etc/passwd System password file.
/usr/local/bin/crack crack binary.
/usr/local/bin/ie IE binary.

DIAGNOSTICS
If ie crashes, simply reboot system to restore stability.

BUG REPORTS TO

A New Linux Business Model

By   | on January 3rd, 2005 No comments

Open Source Unix like operating systems have become leaders in the world servers, and initiatives such as the W3C have delivered the de facto standards for the web, individual and corporate users continue to give out large sums for proprietary software.

Corporations producing and selling proprietary operating systems and applications software are effectively tapping huge markets and making super profits, while the Open Source Community seems to be picking up crumbs, for the most part.

Corporate members of the Open Source Community, with some notable exceptions such as IBM, are often struggling to break even or are funded by a combination of risk capital and grants; not a good basis for a business in the long run.

Individual members of the community, the people who do most of the creative work, only occasionally receive financial rewards for their contributions.

This site has start a new discussion on the possibilities, problems and most important their solutions .

PHP and .NET

By   | on December 29th, 2004 No comments

Some days ago my boss Mr. Nilesh Saxena, told me about a project. Feature list and details were very fine and at first sight I decide to do it myself.
But a problem arise as application was to be developed for desktop not for web. Some obivious options were Java, .NET and PHP. We ruled out JAVA due to possible a compatibility issue with the API we were supposed to use in that application.

PHP is web developement langauge so it was also ruled out. PHP-GTK was an option but we stuck at the availability of PHP enviroment at application users desktop.

Our last option was .NET but… I was not familiar with it.
So, I just loose the project, my boss assign it to a other fellow.

I was really depressed. So I decide to look after .NET. What is this? Why or Why not it is important.

Since last three days I am reading about .NET and found that it is not so great thing as it is branded by .NET programmers ( I am basically a PHP programmer, so there is chance of biased opinion.)

Any way I am learning it.

I found a very intresting article about .NET vs PHP.
read it

I am also looking for the possibilities of using .NET enviroment in PHP.

E-Commerce and Indian Cyber Law

By   | on December 21st, 2004 No comments

Refrence::

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinions/962588.cms

“Baazee could have taken care of such listings before head. Baazee should review all the listings where the products violate copy right or any IPR. The telecom/internet service providers and online auctioneers must understand there responsibility in such cases. Meanwhile, it is high time for the specifications standardization bodies (ITU/3GPP/ETSI/), telecom equipment manufactures and the law enforcement agencies to think in the direction to save society values and moral ethics. We should not in general blind follow the technology. We should think ahead of any technology misuse.”

I am surprised to read the comments. Is it really possible to do E-commerce in this way? Bazee.com CEO just arreasted in this case.(Released on bail as per morning newspaper). How is the CEO responsible for such things? Is Bazee.com responsible/accountable in this case?

Bazee.com is a auction site run by its users, and they have a user agreement with all seller for not using their site for promoting pornographic material. If any user has crossed his limits and placed such items on the site, user is solely reponsible? I think arrest of Bazee.com CEO was unjustified and was a work of uninformed police officers. What was the purpose behind this arrest, I am unable to see, bazee.com was co-operating in the case, they put off the listing from the site after matter was brought to their notice.

I think, cops want to send a hard message to all ISPs. Who will do business in india then? And if going by the example every phone service provider company CEO will be behind the bar as most of murders and major crime always planned or executed by the help of telephones.
Police should arrest the parents of boys and girls for not giving proper education to thier children. Honable court has advised not to use the name of school so I am not using the school name here, But IMO school also has not any responsbilties.

I am not a big fan of that school but, in the words of one of the student (I guess) at http://movies.dcealumni.com/archives/1212-case-against-baazee-in-dps-teen-sex-scandal/

::

“School teaches about 900 students in the 11th standard. 2 students would comprise 0.2% of the total number. The actions of 0.2% of the population is a poor way to accoutn for the nature of the remaining 99.8% of the student population (of 11th standard alone.)
Those who are pointing fingers at us, students of School are pointing 3 fingers at themselves. For the truth is that though we will continue to remain the finest scholars, the best public speakers, debaters and shall continue to excel in every field, may it be academics, co-curricular activities or sports, the ones who envy us & imagine us to be arrogant, who point fingers and mock at us shall be silenced, when we once again prove that we are not shaken by this incident, for we do have our ethics in place. Principal may have held on to a rotten egg, hoping to discipline him under her influence, but belonging to a rich family, the boy lacked a positive environment at home. Is it fair to blame us for that?”

My concern in this case is court refused to accept electronic contract as real contract ( As long as I know electronic contract are legal in indian cyber law.) If this is the case then ecommerce in india will take a major setback, we simply can not do business without electronic contract, if court will refused to treat electronic contract as real contract then a large number of cases will be in the court very soon as allmost all share trading website in india ( e.g. ICICI ) use electronic contracts for their operations.

After Year 2000 problem…..?

By   | on December 19th, 2004 No comments

Topic may seem very old as year 2000 has passed and all computers are now year 2000 ready.

But before you can take rest here is the list of some other problems:-

Most programs written in the C programming language are relatively immune to the Y2K problem, but suffer instead from the Year 2038 problem. Unix Time stamp will expire on that day as well.
IBM PC hardware suffers from the Year 2116 problem. For a PC, the beginning of time starts at January 1, 1980, and increments by seconds. By 2116, the integer overflows.
Windows NT have a Year 2184 problem.

Good thing is that it will not be major problem as year 2000.

Well-written programs can simply be recompiled with a new version of the library that uses large byte values for storing values
because the library encapsulates the whole time activity with its own time types and functions.

Well I am worried about my own php applications, will they run after 2038? My mind is getting a naughty answer, it says, “Who will need your applications in their present structure after 34 year.”

Linux Days are here again !!!

By   | on December 14th, 2004 No comments

No, I have not any latest news about the infamous linux legal battle.

I am just talking about my return to linux after a gap of around six months. Yesterday I installed linux on the machine I use at work.

Since last six months I was using Windows 2000 for development work as most of the persons in my company were not familar with linux, but two days ago, after a major virus attack on our systems, the management simply accepted my pending advice to install linux in the company at least on the main server.

We were doing all our work for linux platform in php, perl and mysql. Our web host server was a linux one and developement server was windows. It was realy problematic, specially in case of perl where we have to set the permissions for every file after every modification and upload to server.

After work all night for data backup, I started it at 7 a.m. (Indian Time), installation was smooth, and server was up in less than two hours. Now I am writing this post using galeon on my redhat box.
